Intro to Aerial

Come one, come all to the Circus Collective's aerial sampler class! This class is designed for people who have NEVER EVER tried aerial arts, and is suitable for any level of fitness. Class will focus on the fundamentals of aerial silks, low flying trapeze, lyra, and aerial hammock. We will touch on the topics of flexibility and acro as well. Join us for a super fun-filled class for people of any level.

Level 1 Aerial Silks

Aerial Silks (also called Aerial Fabric or Aerial Tissu) is a beautiful, creative, and challenging art form that builds upper body and core strength, kinesthetic awareness, and coordination. This class is available for all levels, especially beginners and is designed to teach and safely build the foundations of aerial fabric training. Students will learn basic climbs, foot locks, hip keys, and sequences starting low to the ground on aerial fabric. These classes are small and specific, with individual coaching and attention to detail.

Prerequisites:

  • Positive attitude

  • Interest in classes

  • Willingness to learn and receive direction and critique

  • Active participation in building skills, strength, and vocabulary

  • Safety awareness.

Level 1/2 Aerial Silks

Come improve your technique and build your repertoire with aerial silks. With an emphasis on building endurance through sequencing, students will learn poses and wraps in silks as well as build vertical strength through climbing and inversions. Students will learn transitions, sequences, and beginning drops on the aerial fabric.
 

Prerequisites:

  • Figure 8 footlock

  • Dancer's footlock

  • French & Russian climb 

  • Able to invert

Level 1/2 Aerial Silks Choreo

Silks Choreography will use both the sling and aerial fabric to develop stamina by working through longer sequences. Students will be challenged with endurance and encouraged to find their flow in the air. While not a performance course, the content will include pre-choreographed aerial routines. Our focus will be more on musicality and expression than skill-skill-skill. If you have an interest in performing, whether now or in the future, this class is for you!
 

Prerequisites:

  • Figure 8 footlock

  • Dancer's footlock

  • French & Russian climb 

  • Able to invert

Pre-requisites are strongly recommended but not required. Please contact the instructor for an assessment if you are unsure or are newer to aerial. Students are also encouraged to arrive early to warm up to maximize time in the air for the sequences.

Level 2/3 Aerial Silks

Come improve your technique and build your repertoire with aerial silks. With an emphasis on building endurance through sequencing, students will learn poses and wraps in silks as well as build vertical strength through climbing and inversions. Students will learn transitions, sequences, and beginning drops on the aerial fabric.

 

Prerequisites:

  • Everything from level 1 & level 1/2

  • Comfortable with hip key in air (both sides)

  • Straddle back

  • Double footlock (in air)

  • Double eggbeaters (in air)

  • 20 second bent arm hang

Level 3/4 Aerial Silks

Come improve your technique and build your repertoire with aerial silks. With an emphasis on building endurance through sequencing, students will learn poses and wraps in silks as well as build vertical strength through climbing and inversions. Students will learn transitions, sequences, and beginning drops on the aerial fabric.

 

Prerequisites:

  • Everything from Level 2 and 1.5

  • Clean hip key in air

  • 20 sec straight arm hollow body hold

  • 2 pullups 

  • Double crochet

  • Straddle back

  • Catchers hang/s-wrap

  • Strong straddle climb x 2

  • Single star

  • One 360 drop variation

  • Endurance in the air for 2 minutes

Level 1 Lyra

In this class, you will learn the various techniques to enter, put together sequences, and gracefully exit from the aerial hoop (Lyra), along with conditioning, strength, and flexibility exercises. This class is for all levels, especially beginners.

 

Prerequisites:

  • Positive attitude

  • Interest in classes

  • Willingness to learn and receive direction and critique

  • Active participation in building skills, strength, and vocabulary

  • Safety awareness

Level 2/3 Lyra

In this class, students will improve their technique and build their repertoire with the lyra. They will begin to learn poses and moves on and above the hoop. As you become more advanced, you will learn to spin the apparatus as you execute skills and poses.

Prerequisites:

  • Bent arm knees to chest with 5 sec hold x 3

  • Side mount, tuck mount (self-spotting ok)

  • 10 sec knee hang without spot

  • Front balance with spot

  • 5 lyra poses (without instructor cues)

Mixed Level Trapeze & Lyra

In this class, you will learn the various techniques to enter and exit from the Lyra (aerial hoop) and Trapeze; along with conditioning, strength, and flexibility exercises. This class is for all levels, especially beginners.

  • Active participation in building skills, strength, and vocabulary

  • Safety awareness

Mixed Level Trapeze

In this class, you will learn the various techniques for Trapeze; along with conditioning, strength, and flexibility exercises. This class is for all levels.

  • Active participation in building skills, strength, and vocabulary

  • Safety awareness

Level 2/3 Trapeze (Choreo)

This class will focus on low-flying trapeze choreography, in which the bar is about chin-high and rigged to swing, spin, and move in every angle. In this low-flying trapeze class, students learn technique, as well as ways to interact and dance with the apparatus in a choreographed manner.

Prerequisites:

  • Bent arm knees to chest with 5 sec hold x 3

  • Side mount, tuck mount (self-spotting ok)

  • 10 sec knee hang without spot

  • Front balance with spot

  • 5 above-bar poses (without instructor cues)

  • Stand on bar (with good form sit to stand)

  • 5 sec bent arm hang from ropes with good hollow body

Level 1/2 Sling

This entry-level Sling class is for students looking to start upper body and core strength training. An ever-changing parade of drills aimed to challenge a student's balance, core, grip and ability to hold their body weight off the ground, as well as beginner dance moves for a fun experience with lots of variety. Classes will be half fitness moves, always customized by the coach to the students' individual strength levels, and part dance transitions, exposing students to the dance progressions they will learn in Advanced Sling. Recommended for beginners. Classes will use a single-point nylon sling, hung at hip height.

Level 2/3 Sling

This sling class is for students looking to progress aerial sling skills. An ever-changing parade of drills aimed to challenge a student's balance, core, grip and ability to hold their body weight off the ground, as well as progressive moves for a fun challenge with lots of variety. Class will be half aerial fitness and half dance transitions, exposing students to the dance progressions they will learn in Advanced Sling.

Prerequisites:

  • Level 1 Sling/Silks experience, or teacher approval

Level 1/2 Rope

In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of aerial rope climbs, poses, wraps, and dynamic movement. Prior aerial experience is recommended.

Prerequisites:

  • Standard climb, Russian climb

  • Footlock in air

  • Hip key (from Russian sit in air okay)

  • Able to invert in silks knot with control

  • 15 second straight arm hollow body hold

Advanced Rope

In this class, students will learn fundamental aerial rope progressions that build on climbs, poses, wraps, and dynamic movement.

Prior aerial experience is recommended

 

Prerequisites:

  • Standard climb, Russian climb

  • Clean inverted straddle climb

  • Footlock in air

  • Straddle climb

  • Familiar with beats

  • Hip key (both sides)

  • Able to invert in silks knot with control

  • 15 second straight arm hollow body hold

Straps

Aerial straps, a pair of two belt-like straps with loops for your wrists or feet, are soon to be your favorite apparatus! In this class well use straps as a tool to build strength in essential aerial poses, understand and explore movement pathways, and perfect your technique in the air. There will be a strong emphasis on proper form and injury prevention.

 

Prior experience with aerial arts is recommended, including being comfortable practicing pull-ups, able to invert and hold a straddle, and familiarity with meathooks. It is not expected for you to have prior experience with straps, and those willing to try will not be turned away.

 

Straps can be rough, so its recommended to bring something to cover your wrists - an old pair of socks with some holes cut in them will work just fine. Those with a history of any major shoulder or wrist injuries should get a doctors approval before coming to class. 

Acro Yoga 101

AcroYoga is a playful practice that combines the wisdom of Yoga, the excitement of Acrobatics and the healing elements of Thai Massage. AcroYoga is the practice of "building community through Divine Play." Come learn to fly, base and spot with us!

Handstands

This class teaches the skills and techniques necessary to invert confidently. Rotate through drills that target specific movements required to execute a true handstand. Open your shoulders, strengthen your wrists, and fine-tune your body to move in an extraordinary way. Let's get upside down!

Circus Conditioning

Strengthen the muscles you use most frequently in aerial. This class will wipe you out and ready your body for the endurance it takes to complete sequences and performances, as well as give you strength training tips. This is an all levels class.

Intro to Gymnastics

Athletes will learn proper technique, form, & discipline of tumbling, dance and more. They will learn to: control their body, correct use of muscles, flexibility, and overcome fears, while enhancing their athletic attributes.

All levels welcome!

Level 1/2 Hooping

In this class we will learn the essential hula hoop tricks that will help you build your own flow. You will be taught techniques and concepts that go into creating your own unique style of hoop dance, while giving attention to elegance and form. Tricks such as waist hooping, hooping in lasso, isolations, passing around the body, hand tosses, jump throughs, escalators, lift ups, and an introduction to dancing with your hoop will be incorporated.

All levels Welcome.

Flexibility — Legs

Come join our aerial flexibility coach in this weekly 60-minute all-levels leg flexibility class! In class, we will focus on building a regiment of safe flexibility. We will work on flexibility and strengthening to help all of your circus endeavors from aerial to acro to yoga to party tricks! Wear layered, tight-fitting clothing and keep hair up and out of your face and away from your neck. All levels of flexibility welcome!

Prerequisites:

  • Positive attitude

  • Interest in classes

  • Willingness to learn and receive direction and critique

  • Active participation in building skills, strength, and vocabulary

  • Safety awareness.

Flexibility — Back & Shoulders

Come join our aerial flexibility coach in this weekly 60-minute all-levels back flexibility class! In class, we will focus on building a regiment of safe flexibility. We will work on flexibility and strengthening to help all of your circus endeavors from aerial to acro to yoga to party tricks! Wear layered, tight-fitting clothing and keep hair up and out of your face and away from your neck. All levels of flexibility welcome!

Should Circus Collective cancel a class you are enrolled in, the class credit will be returned to your account. This credit will maintain the original expiration date. If the credit has fewer than 30 days remaining, please contact the front desk for an extension within 48 hours.
